READ

Foster a love of reading in children by volunteering to READ with United Way of Hays County. Reading to children at an early age has been shown to have numerous positive effects on their academic success, educational attainment and even social development.  Volunteers bring stories to life, page by page, inspiring young students to love reading at an early age.

Literacy Events
What: Throughout the year, UWHC hosts volunteer reading events at local day cares and schools. Volunteers spend time reading to classrooms of students for 30 minutes to an hour. We are building a core of volunteers who love to read during these special events. By registering, UWHC will add you to a list of to be notified when we schedule an upcoming event. Events include United Way Day of Action (June 21), Dr. Seuss Reading Day (Spring), Llama Llama Read-a-Rama (Fall) and others.  
When: 3-4 times per year
Where: Hays County childcare, daycare and preschool classrooms.
Time: 30 minute-1 hour time slots to be scheduled.
Details: Volunteer times are scheduled to meet the needs of both the classroom availability and volunteer's time.
Sunday Stories
What: Volunteer with United Way of Hays County to read to young children at Sunday Stories. Each month features a different theme and corresponding craft. Volunteers read several books to attending children, and then assist the children with crafts. This is a great opportunity for individuals and groups to be involved.
Where: San Marcos Public Library in the children's area
When: 2nd Sunday of every month.
Time: 3:00-4:00pm (1 hour) Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to start time for set up.
Details: UWHC provides all craft materials and the library provides the books.
