Testimonial
In the media, one can read about abused children, those who've been abandoned and those
who've run away. The group that is often misreported as runaways are throwaways. Those
who are under the age of 18, yet still too young to take care of themselves, and have been
told by their families to leave home and not come back. One in particular was fortunate
to be in Wal-Mart one morning, trying to use the pay phone, desperately searching for a
family member willing to take him in. A local woman overheard his conversation and told
him about the shelter operated by the Greater San Marcos Youth Center (GSMYC).
Dalton arrived on our doorstep, tired and hungry amd after having been on the streets for
several days, he needed a shower. GSMYC staff intervened with his family (living in 3
other states), to no avail. No one in his family wanted him, nor were they willing to
help him get on his feet. He was so grateful to have found a place where he could be safe;
he even offered to "earn his keep."
Dalton did earn his keep while he was there. He helped with the younger children, acting
as a tolerant and patient big brother. He helped staff with the cooking and cleaning and
never complained, always willing to help where he could. After he left, he secured a job
in New Braunfels and found a roommate, all of which he managed to accomplish without his
family. Dalton drops by regularly for hugs and support, giving staff an update on how
his life is going. According to this young man, the Greater San Marcos Youth Council is
his family.
