UWHC speakers inspire youth during Summer Fun

Each week United Way of Hays County schedules speakers to present to children enrolled in the City of San Marcos Summer Fun program.

The United Way Hays County, Lunch. Learn. LIVE UNITED program continues to enrich young minds throughout the summer. United Way Hays County is partnering with the Summer Fun program to provide weekly speakers to present to children, ages 7-14, enrolled in the program. Each week, professionals share anecdotes, career advice and information about educational training in their respective fields.

“We understand that during the summer vacation kids have a brief break from academic work, but that doesn’t mean that learning should stop,” says Mike Yates, Programs Coordinator for United Way of Hays County. “Our partnership with Summer Fun is an opportunity to bring speakers that are both entertaining and educational.”

This is the first year United Way Hays County has partnered with Summer Fun, an 8-week program run through the city of San Marcos during the summer. United Way of Hays County has invited a spectrum of speakers, including athletes, musicians, prevention specialists and other professionals, to share encouraging anecdotes and motivate children to investigate various career paths.

Texas State University football player, Earl Smith, themed his speech, “Success is not a straight line.” Smith spoke to the students about how hard work and dedication contributed to his success.“It was great to watch these kids get excited about pursuing their dreams and acknowledge the hard work it takes to achieve them,” said Earl Smith.

United Way of Hays County hosts career speakers throughout the year. Professionals are invited to speak to students at Lunch. Learn. LIVE UNITED panels held during the school year. For more information visit or call (512)353-1422.
